What is the best way to set up die cuts for printing?

Can you answer celeste2568’s question about Scrapbooking?:

I am designing a job with die cuts. I know you make them bleed, but how do oyu determine the shape? Do I use an outline in RGB so printer can see it, but it won’t print on CMYK press?

Scrapbooking Feedback: No, hopefully you are using a program that has layers, like InDesign or Illustrator.

The die cut line will go on it own layer. And call the layer “DIE CUT - DON’T PRINT”. NEVER use the outline in RGB because the printer will still see it, it’ll just convert the color to CMYK.

Instead, give it an obvious color that doesn’t show up in your design often. I like to use pure magenta or pure cyan and a dashed line. Putting that on its own layer and naming the layer makes it obvious for the printer. And when you supply the files you tell them that the die cut is in the file, but they’ll see that anyway if they are a good printing company.
